Traders at the Ogbaru market in Anambra

by Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra

It was learnt that the women were going
about their normal business activities
when over 300 brigade members, led by
one Kenneth Okonkwo, entered the
market and shot into the air.
The ensuing pandemonium forced the
businesswomen to flee to safety with
many sustaining injury.
Not done, the ‘governor’s police’, believed
to be established to help the government
generate revenue, went after the goods
being sold by the women destroying them.
“We could not believe our eyes when
these Ocha Brigade people and their
thugs numbering over 300 invaded the
market this afternoon.
“I got a phone call that some hoodlums
had invaded the relief market and on
getting there, I saw Okonkwo, the
commander of Ocha Brigade with his men
beating traders, destroying their goods
and shooting sporadically.
“It was like a war. I have not seen
something like this before. They were
beating these women like beasts,”
spokesperson for the traders,” Charles
Orji, said.
Chinyere Okafor, a 35-year-old mother of
five who was injured in the fracas, said
she lost N45,000 cash and her goods.
Zeribe Ezeanuna who witnessed the
incident, said it was like war.
“They did not inform anybody about their
coming. They only invaded the market
and shot sporadically and injured people
who had come to trade,” he said.
Commissioner for Trade and Commerce in
the state, Uzoamaka Ilobi, promised that
the government would investigate the
incident adding that the governor was
pro-people.
She said the agency was working
according to the directive of the
government to decongest roads and that
this was exactly what its officials are
doing.
It was learnt that the government agents
stormed the market to chase them from
trading along the road.
In Lagos, residents have also had reasons
to complain about the activities of the
Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) and the
activities of its officials.
