Mohammed Barkindo the EX NNPC boss now becomes OPEC secretary general

Former Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation (NNPC) Group Managing
Director (GMD), Mohammed Barkindo, is
the new Secretary-General of
Organisation of Petroleum Exporting
Countries (OPEC).
Barkindo also served as the acting secretary-
general of OPEC in 2006, and was NNPC GMD
from 2009-2010.
An excerpt of an official statement obtained
from OPEC’s website reads: “The Conference
decided to appoint Mr. Mohammed Sanusi
Barkindo, from Nigeria, as Secretary General
of the Organization, with effect from 1st
August 2016, for a period of three years. In
doing so, the Conference expressed its
appreciation to HE Abdalla Salem El-Badri for
his leadership of the Secretariat and the
Organization during his tenure as Secretary
General.”
The minister of state for petroleum, Ibe
Kachikwu also confirmed the appointment of
Barkindo as the new OPEC Secretary-General
on his Twitter page.
Kachikwu said "It is my pleasure to
announce that Dr. Mohammed Sanusi
Barkindo has been appointed next #OPEC
Secretary General.”
“Congratulations Dr. Mohammed Sanusi
Barkindo on your appointment as OPEC
Secretary General.”
Barkindo’s appointment was decided at the
169th Meeting of the organisation, which was
held in Vienna, Austria, on Thursday, 2nd
June 2016.
Diezani Alison Mdueke was the first female
President of OPEC. » She was elected at the
166th OPEC Ordinary meeting in Vienna on
27 November 2014.
The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting
Countries (OPEC) is a permanent
intergovernmental organisation of 13 oil-
exporting developing nations that coordinates
and unifies the petroleum policies of its
member countries.
